Remarks

From Matthies: "Oliver Wolcott (1726-1797) lived on South Street and was one of the most prominent citizens of the town. He held many offices and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and Governor of Connecticut. General Washington spent a night at the Governor's Mansion. A statue of George III was torn down by the Sons of Liberty on Bowling Green, New York City, and Oliver Wolcott had it transported to Litchfield, where it was melted down and made into bullets in the Wolcott Orchard by Madam Wolcott and her neighbors."
