Remarks

From Matthies: "The Indians planted orchards and built corn-stalls on their reservations after most of their lands were sold. A deed executed by them in 1733 mentions "Cockshure's Island" near Pootatuck Village and "Mancheere's Corn-stall." This orchard is mentioned in the deed and other old instruments as "the old orchard," and was used as a council place. Thirteen of the trees were bearing fruit in July 1853."
