From Matthies's book: "This was an ancient tree, estimated to be about four hundred years of age when a strong gale blew it down in 1884. It is probable that Colonel John Burr purchased land from the Indians under this tree. He held council with them and for nearly two hundred years he and his descendants own the land on which this tree stood."
