Remarks

From Matthies's book: "The Pequots made their last stand against the white man in 1637 in the Pequot Swamp. Fairfield was settled after the battle. Only a portion of the swamp remains on the Hawkins property on Center Street south of the Post Road. The present beeches are descendants of the ones which grew here in the seventeenth century."
