Remarks

From Matthies's book: "This 'Mighty Oak' once stood at what is now the corner of Chapel and George Streets but in 1638 it was on the Widow Hannah Beecher's lot near the inlet where the settlers landed. It was under this oak that the planters gathered to hear Rev. John Davenport on their first Lord's Day in New Haven. The stump of the tree was used to hold the anvils of Nathaniel Beecher and of his grandson, David."
