From Matthies's book: "The pine stood on the road between Whigville and Polkville near Bristol, and tradition says that Asahel Mix, who lived near the tree and was a firm believer in the Millerite doctrine, climbed the tree in an ascension robe on that day in 1843 when the Lord was supposed to come. The facts were that in his ordinary clothes Mr. Mix climbed the tree to fix his well sweep which was attached to the tree by an iron rod and had gotten out of order."
