Remarks

From Matthies's book: "This sycamore, or buttonwood tree stood on the meadows north of the bridge and was estimated to be six hundred years old. Mamoosun the Young, last of the descendants of the Proprietors, went to live with the Six Nations after he sold his rights in lands at Chatham in 1749. He occasionally returned and slept in the hollow trunk of the sycamore. Another story is that he accidentally killed a tribesman and was closely pursued by the relatives of the dead man. He hid in the hollow trunk and his squaw fed him until he escaped to another tribe."
