From Matthies's book: "This magnificent old elm stands on the property of Rutherford Pratt on Hamburg Road. It has grown around a gravestone bearing the name Jasper Gray and the date 1728. Just who Jasper Gray was is not known but the tree as a sapling was evidently planted at or near the head of the grave and has grown around the stone."
